Huskies Split Pair in Baseball

HAMPTON, VA-- The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a pair of games on day two of the Apprentice School Builders tournament in Hampton, Virginia. The Huskies beat Lock Haven, 9-6 in the morning and lost to East Stroudsburg, 10-4 in the evening.
In game one of the day the Huskies beat Lock Haven, 9-6. Casey Markey (York/Dallastown) went five innings to earn the win, while David Rute (Milton/Milton) pitched the final four to earn the save.
The Huskies fell behind 3-0 in the top half of the first, but rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the first. Vinnie James (Bristol/Bristol) had the big hit in the inning, a two-run triple with two outs. James later scored on a wild-pitch to tie the game.
After Lock Haven went back in front 4-3 in the third, the Huskies took their first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Andy Bucher (Littlestown/Littlestown) and Kevin Ward (Upper Darby/Msgn. Bonner) each had RBI singles in the inning to make it a 5-4 game. The Huskies added a run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Matt Robinson (York/Red Lion) to take a 6-4 lead. The Bald Eagles would tie the score at 6-6 with two runs in the seventh, but Bloomsburg would rally one more time. In the home half of the seventh, James doubled and scored on a hit by Nick Lerch (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove). Zach Silver (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) later followed with a sacrifice fly, with David Miller getting an RBI on a ground to make it 9-6.
James finished 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Kevin Ward was 2-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
In game two, the Huskies led 4-2 going into the top of the eighth, but the Warriors scored eight times over the next two innings to pull away and win.
With the Huskies trailing 2-1 in the fourth, the Huskies scored three times on one hit to go along with two walks, an error and a balk.
Dustin Johnson (Sunbury/Shikellamy) went the first seven innings and allowed just two runs while striking out five.
Bloomsburg will face Kutztown on Saturday at 6 p.m.
